Martin was the CEO of Aberdeen Asset Management PLC, which he co-founded in 1983. Under his leadership, Aberdeen became one of the world’s leading independent asset managers through a combination of organic growth and strategic acquisitions. In its first year, the business had assets under management (AuM) of £70m and reported profits before tax of £87, in 2016 the figure was £352m with AuM at £312bn. In 2017 Aberdeen merged with Standard Life, to become Standard Life Aberdeen (now abrdn). Martin was co-CEO and subsequently vice chairman until he retired from abrdn in September 2020. Martin is chairman of Revolut, AssetCo and Toscafund, deputy chairman of River and Mercantile Group and senior independent director of Glencore, alongside a number of other directorships, including The European Tour. Martin was born in Malaysia and went to school and university in Aberdeen.
